In Pennsylvania, as in most states in the U.S., an individual has the right to represent themselves in a criminal case, known as “pro se” representation. However, it is generally not recommended to handle a criminal case without the assistance of an attorney, as the criminal justice system can be complex and the consequences of a conviction can be severe. The prosecutor and the judge cannot give you legal advice. Their legal advice is to plead guilty and take the punishment as severe as it is going to be. They do not have your best interest in mind. An attorney can provide legal advice, negotiate with prosecutors, and represent the individual in court. It is ultimately up to the individual to decide whether to handle their own case or to hire an attorney. But the old saying is true “”A person who represents himself has a fool for a client.”-Ben Franklin
